The most common mistake new cannabis consumers make has nothing to do with what they buy — it's how much, and how fast. Nearly every "bad experience" story traces back to the same two errors: taking too much, or not waiting long enough before taking more.
This guide covers the honest basics budtenders share with every new customer.
The golden rule
Cannabis affects everyone differently — body weight, metabolism, tolerance, what you've eaten, even your mood. Because you can always take more but never take less, the universal beginner strategy is: start with a small amount, then wait.

Answer two questions for a sensible starting point. This is general education, not medical advice.
Onset is slow — feeling nothing at 45 minutes is normal, not a signal to eat more.

How they work: Edibles pass through your digestive system and liver, which converts THC into a compound that tends to feel stronger and last longer than inhaled cannabis.
- Onset: commonly 30 minutes to 2 hours. This delay is exactly why people overdo it — "I don't feel anything yet" at the 45-minute mark is normal, not a signal to eat more.
- Duration: often 4–8 hours, sometimes longer.
- Beginner amount: a standard labeled "dose" is often 10mg THC — but many budtenders consider 2.5–5mg the sensible first-time amount. Most gummies cut cleanly in half.
- The waiting rule: wait at least 2 hours before even considering more.
Flower: faster feedback, easier to steer
How it works: Inhaled cannabis reaches the bloodstream through the lungs, so effects arrive within minutes — fast feedback that lets you stop early.
- Onset: typically within minutes.
- Duration: commonly 1–3 hours.
- Beginner approach: one small inhale, wait 10–15 minutes, honestly assess, then decide. A pre-roll is not a challenge to finish.
Reading the label
Because everything at Great Smoky is regulated and lab-tested, the label is trustworthy — a major difference from unregulated hemp products. Check THC content (potency), CBD content (products with meaningful CBD tend to feel gentler), and on edibles, the serving size — the package may contain many doses.

If you overdo it
It happens, even to careful people. The feeling is temporary and passes on its own. Move somewhere calm, hydrate, eat something, and rest — most discomfort fades within a few hours. Treat it as a data point for next time, not a reason to give up on learning your dose.
Safety non-negotiables
- Never drive or operate machinery while impaired.
- Store products locked away from children and pets — edibles especially.
- Avoid mixing with alcohol, particularly while learning your tolerance.
- If you're pregnant, nursing, or on medication, talk to a healthcare provider first.
